A person is a carrier of varying beliefs, both positive and negative. To understand in general, beliefs are the tenets or convictions that people hold to be true. It is absolutely normal for any person to have beliefs, carry and uphold them until they limit your functioning and become a hindrance to your growth. Yes, I am talking about the limiting beliefs that all of us carry, if not a hundred per cent, at least twenty per cent.
Limiting beliefs
Limiting beliefs can flash in your mind in any form. Let me be more precise here and help you identify them. I am listing some common phrases that are an obvious sign that your thoughts are limiting you.
I do not have time.!
I can’t, I can’t because I am not good enough/ I am not like John
I will never good at it, because I failed earlier
What will they think of me?
I can never complete the task
These beliefs can have a number of unfavorable effects on your life. They can block you from making choices, create obstacles in taking up new routes, or reaching your fullest potential.Hence it will ultimately keep you away from utilizing your gifts & abilities, and not allowing you to live your deserving life.
Where do such beliefs come from?
Limiting beliefs are often rooted in our experiences, thoughts and mindset.
Education is an important means of social control and sometimes instead of limiting a person’s socially unacceptable behaviour, it limits their beliefs. Such Institution always teaches a person to obey their authorities. This can incline a person to always seek others ‘ opinion and approvals.
Past experience, if gone wrong can make a person to never try new things again. Take the example of a person being taunted and bullied at the stage for his/her talk. He/She would never like to give a talk again.
Family background can also play a significant role here. Growing up with parents who have the same kind of limiting belief system will definitely instill the same kind in you.
Ways to identify & overcome those beliefs
Identifying those beliefs first needs you to understand the nature of the limiting beliefs. Such beliefs usually are :
- Destination based: Beliefs that focus on the conclusions. For example : I know I would fail, I can’t because I am dull
- Directives : Beliefs that are the routes to your destination. For example : I don’t have time
After you learn the nature of limiting beliefs, the first thing you need to do is :
Write all of your limiting beliefs down
Segregate them and figure out whether they are destination based or directives
Figure out what growth fostering. belief can replace those limiting beliefs
Put them into practise
Let me explain it to you here. Imagine you are trying to complete a creative task very beautifully and are hesitant to put it out to the world. You think that your work is not good enough to go public and face appreciation and criticism from others. In such circumstances you need to replace the thought of not good enough, into affirmations like I have done my best, it deserves to be shared and feel content for the fact itself that you did your best.
My final thought
Overcoming limiting beliefs which makes your worth low, leads you to undeserving destinations should be eliminated as soon as possible. You are capable of everything and deserve every best thing available. Don’t let your limiting beliefs make you feel incompetent, worthless and a failure.Whenever limiting beliefs hinder your ways follow the four steps that I have me mentioned toned above and always remember the empowering words of Jean Sibelius:
“If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price”
